Rock Climbing – A New National Sport?
Get this, there are a bunch of Frisbee dog (aka Disc Dog) folks over at Skyhoundz who are trying to get Congress to ditch baseball in favor of Frisbee dogging as the new national pastime for the U.S. of A. It’s right there in black and white on the home page of their website. We say, hold on just a minute! Now we aren’t saying that disc dogs aren’t fun to watch and all, but really, if America is going to get a new national sport, it should be rock climbing.
As far as we here at Atlanta Rocks! can tell, no other country counts rock climbing as their national sport. Now, you know that once we start talking about it, those “Frenchies” will jump right in there and try and steal it away from us. They will argue that they have good wine, good food, and a whole bunch of soft white limestone to climb on. We will respond that limestone is all well and good for those with delicate fingers, but you aren’t a real climber until you’re bleeding anyway. And speaking of bleeding, where in France can you find carnivorous granite like we have in Joshua Tree, or ultra-long big wall extravaganzas like El Capitan and Half Dome? Honestly, we’ve got the Gunks, Eldorado Canyon and the Flat Irons for crying out loud. Don’t even get us started about the T-Wall, Looking Glass, The Red River Gorge, and Sand Rock (well, maybe not Sand Rock). Anyway, if you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t be climbing it.
So, we rest our case. If any sport should be a National Sport, it should be rock climbing, and if any country should claim it, it’s America.
Now, let’s sing out from the mountain tops and get this done! Email your elected representative and help keep the dogs in the dog parks where they belong.
